Caring for Wool and Knitwear

Caring for Wool and Knitwear

Good knitwear is made to last for years, but only if it is treated with a little care. The good news is that it needs far less attention than most people think. Here is how we look after our own knits between seasons.

Wash less, air more

Wool is naturally resistant to odour. After wearing, fold your knit over the back of a chair and let it breathe overnight. Most of the time, that is all it needs. Wash only when there is a mark or after several wears.

Hand wash, cool and gentle

When it is time to wash, use cool water and a wool-specific detergent. Press the water through the fibres rather than rubbing or wringing. Rinse in water of the same temperature, then roll the knit in a clean towel to lift out moisture.

Always dry flat

Hanging a wet knit stretches it out of shape. Lay it flat on a towel, ease it back to its original proportions and leave it away from direct sun or heat. Our Ribbed Turtleneck keeps its rib and roll neck best when dried this way.

Fold, never hang

Store knits folded in a drawer or on a shelf. Hangers leave marks at the shoulders and slowly pull the fabric longer. A fine-gauge piece like the Button Knit Cardigan folds neatly into thirds.

Deal with pilling calmly

Some pilling is normal in soft fibres, especially where fabric rubs. Remove it gently with a fabric comb, working in one direction.

This is general guidance. Always follow the care label on your garment first.
