Linen is one of the oldest fabrics we know, and one of the most rewarding to live with. It is made from the fibres of the flax plant, and it behaves quite differently from cotton or synthetics. Understanding it makes it much easier to love.
Why linen feels cool
Linen fibres are long and strong, and the woven fabric breathes well and dries quickly. In warm, humid weather it feels lighter on the skin, which is why it has long been a favourite for hot climates.
Why it softens over time
New linen can feel crisp. Each wash relaxes the fibres a little more, so the fabric becomes softer, drapier and more personal to you. Our Linen Lounge Set is a good example: it settles into a softer, easier drape the more it is worn and washed.
About creases
Linen creases. That is part of its character, not a flaw. A relaxed rumple looks natural on a camp-collar shirt or a wide trouser. If you prefer a smoother finish, steam it lightly while it is still slightly damp.
How to care for it
- Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle.
- Avoid overloading the machine so the fabric can move freely.
- Line dry in the shade and shake out before hanging.
- Skip fabric softener, which can coat the fibres.
How to wear it
Wear linen as a full set at home or on holiday, or break it up: the shirt over a slip dress, the trousers with a fine knit tank.
This is general guidance. Always follow the care label on your garment first.
